Meet the team: Industrial Lasers’ Dave Earl

As technical sales engineer for our industrial lasers group, with 27 years’ experience in the laser industry, there aren’t many questions that Dave can’t answer. If you come to us for help with your laser application, he is a great person to speak to. Let’s find out a bit more about him.

How did you come to work in the laser industry?

“I trained as a toolmaker but was building lasers by hand in the late 80s. I then moved on to a role testing lasers before selling lasers internationally and then running laser applications. I think it’s safe to say I know a lot about lasers!”

What does your role at Laser Lines entail?

“I joined the business just under five years ago and it’s my responsibility to generate and follow-up on business leads. These could be from meeting potential customers at exhibitions, peer-to-peer recommendations, or repeat orders from existing customers.”

“I don’t only look after end-user customers who want turnkey solutions, I have a large OEM customer base as well. In short, it’s my responsibility to make sure our customers end up with the right solution to suit their specific business needs.”

How do you guarantee the right solution?

“It’s very much a consultative role from the outset. I’ll begin by looking at the customer’s material and then recommend the right laser for the job. Then I carry out thorough laser trials (either at our Banbury facility, on-site at the customer’s premises, or remotely managed trials in Germany or the US) so I can substantiate my initial recommendations with the test results.”

“My job is to then visit the customer’s site to ascertain how best to integrate the recommended solution into the business’s existing operations. I oversee the installation of the system, which could be carried out by the Laser Lines’ team of experts, or working with a third party to implement a bespoke system, or the customer may prefer for its own engineers to install the solution. The key is what works best for the customer and deciding which approach will achieve the optimum results.”

“Customers deal with Laser Lines on a consultative basis in that they rely on our outstanding product knowledge, but the business’s extensive network of contacts is vital to facilitate bespoke, tailor-made solutions to guarantee we solve the exact business needs of the customer.”

What is the biggest challenge you face?

“The crux of my entire role is making sure I understand completely what the customer is trying to achieve. It’s only then that I can recommend the right solution to fulfil the customer’s business need. Customers in general know what they’re talking about, as lasers have been around for a long time, but I do have to be careful to manage expectations in terms of what can and can’t be achieved with lasers, particularly with regards to cost.”

What is the best part of your job?

“It has to be seeing a happy customer, as that’s what it’s all about after all. If the customer isn’t happy, then I’m not doing my job properly. It’s not just a case of installing a system that works, the long-term support and aftercare are as equally important, if not more so.”

“People like to think they’ve bought the right equipment but they won’t know that for definite until they have a need for support and find they’re being supported properly. The fact that Laser Lines deals with so much repeat business is testament to the excellent levels of customer service and support we provide.”

Do you have any advice for laser customers?

“The best piece of advice I have is to ensure you have clarity on what you’re getting for your money. Particularly now in these economically volatile times, businesses are having to think twice about how they’re spending their money, and rightly so.”

“It’s important to install the right solution, but by ‘right’ solution, I mean one that provides the best overall value and long-term ROI. Cheapest definitely does not always represent best value for money.”
