Our expert team have many years’ experience in helping customers choose the right photonics laser for the job, so have a look at some of the most common questions we get asked, below. 

“Can Laser Lines help choose a power or energy meter for my laser?”

Yes, if you let us know the wavelength and beam diameter plus the power for a CW laser, and the pulse energy, pulse width and repetition rate for a pulsed laser then we’ll help select your ideal meter. If you need a more immediate answer, please use Gentec’s Product Finder at and then get in touch with us.

“Can you recalibrate my power or energy meter?”

Yes, we handle UK and Ireland calibrations for all Gentec-EO items, though calibrations take place at Gentec-EO in Canada. Please contact us with details of your item and its serial number and we will send you a returns form. “Do I need laser safety equipment with my laser, and can Laser Lines supply it?”

Safety must be considered when operating any laser, but every situation and setup is different. We can provide general advice on laser safety and supply the recommended eye protection for any lasers, so please get in touch if you have any questions or concerns. 

“What is the difference between a DPSS and a Diode laser?”

A DPSS (Diode Pumped Solid State) laser is a laser in which a solid gain medium (eg: Nd:YAG) is pumped by a laser diode. DPSS lasers have higher beam quality across a wide range of powers as the beam quality is dependent on the gain crystal and not the input diode. They can also be Q-switched to produce high energy and high repetition rate pulsed lasers, such as Photonics Industries range of Nd:YAG, Nd:YLF and Nd:YVO4 lasers.

The limitations of a diode mean single transverse mode high beam quality diode lasers such as Cobolt’s MLDs can only exist at low powers. Higher power diode lasers such as nLIGHT’s Pearls and elements therefore only operate in multi-mode with a large divergence. There are advantages to diode lasers though, as they are lower priced, more energy efficient, and can be easily directly modulated at high frequency. 

“Does Laser Lines supply gas lasers?”

Yes, we still supply CO2 lasers via our industrial laser arm. We no longer supply HeNe or Argon lasers, but we have ideal Argon laser replacements from Cobolt and Azur Light Systems. 

“Does Laser Lines supply optics and optomechanics?”

Yes, we supply custom optics from Iridian, and catalogue optics and optomechanics from Opto4u. You can see details of our range on our photonics accessories and components page.

“What are the highest power CW single longitudinal mode (SLM) lasers you offer?”

We supply Azur Light Systems fibre lasers which offer up to 50W of single mode at 1064nm and up to 10W at 532nm. 

“Does Laser Lines supply laser line generators?”

Yes, we supply DLC custom diode module lasers on a volume basis, so if you have a custom line generator application, then please get in touch.
